The National Academies Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate is currently soliciting nominations for a committee of 12 experts. This committee will be pivotal in undertaking a new study on contemporary scientific comprehension and the potential for extreme event attribution. The study aims to refresh and rebuild upon the 2016 National Academies report ‘Attribution of Extreme Weather Events in the Context of Climate Change.’
The study’s primary objectives include identifying critical research priorities to enhance attribution capabilities, exploring methodologies to extend attribution investigations to regions with limited data, and offering recommendations for effectively communicating attribution science findings to relevant stakeholders.
The National Academies seeks subject matter experts in extreme event attribution, climate variability and change, meteorology, data analysis and statistics, science/risk communication, hazard/risk management, environmental law and economics, and the application of attribution science.
Sponsors include the Bezos Earth Fund, the National Academy of Sciences Arthur L. Day Fund, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Science Foundation, and Robert Litterman. The deadline is July 31, 2024.
