NASEM, the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Environmental Change and Society National Statistics, released a new consensus study report entitled “Developing a Strategy to Evaluate the National Climate Assessment.” The following post is an overview of the report.
The National Climate Assessment (NCA) is periodically prepared by the United States Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) to analyze global climate change comprehensively. Before its publication, the report undergoes rigorous review to ensure technical precision. The National Academies developed a strategy for devising and implementing an evaluation framework to facilitate stakeholder engagement with the NCA. This framework is about assessing the past and shaping the future. It aims to improve the ongoing and future iterations of the NCA and related products, promoting a culture of continuous enhancement and instilling hope for the future of climate assessment.
The NCA serves diverse audiences, each with unique needs and levels of access to climate information. Understanding and catering to these diverse groups is crucial to the evaluation’s success. By examining the interconnected networks of these audiences and how the stakeholders use, adapt, and disseminate information from the report, the NCA can better meet the needs of its report consumers. Evaluating phases provides a comprehensive understanding of the influence of federal climate science on national decisions. It helps the USGCRP identify and address any gaps and weaknesses in the NCA, its related products, and future communication strategies. Read the consensus study report online.
