The Future of Drought in the United States
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is inviting recommendations for experts to join a new study focused on the future of drought in the United States. Centering on climate risk, the study will evaluate how droughts are characterized, assessed, and responded to in a changing climate.
Further, the Study Committee aims to propose a framework for integrating non-stationarity into drought assessments, applicable to various geographic areas, spatial scales, and temporal dimensions, which will guide critical decisions related to short-term risk management and long-term adaptation strategies.
To achieve its goals, the National Academies staff intends to form a committee of approximately ten volunteer experts and gather information on potential speakers, participants, and peer reviewers for related publications. According to the Statement of Task, staff seek expertise in the following areas.
- Hydrology;
- Dynamical and statistical meteorology;
- Climatology, including climate variability and climate change;
- Weather and climate modeling;
- Statistics;
- Paleoclimatology;
- Sociology, and;
- Economics.
*Membership in NAS, NAE, or NAM is not required to suggest an expert for this study.
