The International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) has released two exposure drafts proposing significant updates to the SASB Standards and related amendments to the Industry-based Guidance on Implementing IFRS S2 Climate-related Disclosures.
As part of its 2024–2026 work plan, the ISSB is conducting a comprehensive review of nine high-priority industries, including all eight within the Extractives & Minerals Processing sector and the Processed Foods industry. In addition, the proposed revisions aim to align key sustainability metrics across 41 other sectors, focusing on issues such as Water Management and Workforce Health & Safety.
To ensure consistency with the updated SASB Standards, the ISSB is also recommending consequential amendments to the Industry-based Guidance under IFRS S2. These changes would affect the nine prioritized industries and 37 of the 41 others included in the proposal.
The objective of the proposed amendments is twofold: to support companies applying the ISSB’s IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards (specifically IFRS S1 and IFRS S2), and to enhance the usefulness of sustainability information for investors. The updates also aim to support the numerous global companies that continue to use the SASB Standards voluntarily.
This consultation marks the first opportunity for global stakeholders of the IFRS Foundation to provide comprehensive input on the relevance, cost-effectiveness, and decision-usefulness of the SASB Standards. Public feedback is also being sought on key sustainability metrics related to climate, nature, and human capital—specifically those involving greenhouse gas emissions, energy and water management, labor practices, and employee health and safety.
Stakeholders are invited to respond to targeted consultation questions and complete a dedicated survey, allowing them to focus their input on the topics most relevant to their sector or area of interest.
