The following post summarizes the article “FEMA-BRIC Standards Available on ASCE AMPLIFY,” published online in the ASCE American Society of Civil Engineers, Civil Engineering Source, and authored by ASCE contributor Ireland Degges, Aff.M.ASCE.

Including the FEMA Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities initiative into ASCE AMPLIFY enhances the platform with 12 standards and three manuals of practice. These publications provide detailed insights into building codes and standards aimed at reducing the impact of climate change and future disasters on vulnerable regions. ASCE AMPLIFY is an essential hub for civil engineering standards, offering subscribers a wide array of ASCE standards.

According to Tom Smith, executive director of ASCE, “Our future hinges on resilient, future-ready infrastructure. The ASCE AMPLIFY digital platform is a crucial gateway to vital ASCE standards and practice manuals. With content that has been rigorously validated, verified, and deemed trustworthy, AMPLIFY stands as a dependable resource for proactively enhancing infrastructure performance and resilience.”

Among the FEMA-BRIC resources is ASCE 73-23: Standard Practice for Sustainable Infrastructure, covering the entire lifecycle of sustainable infrastructure development across projects of any scale. The collection also includes ASCE 24-24: Flood Resistant Design and Construction, a recently updated standard that outlines the construction of structures capable of withstanding floods designed to meet or surpass the National Flood Insurance Program’s requirements.

These are only two examples of the standards featured in AMPLIFY’s FEMA-BRIC collection. Additional standards include:

  • ASCE/SEI 7: Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures
  • ASCE/SEI 8: Standard Specifications for the Design of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Membranes
  • ASCE/SEI 41: Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings
  • ASCE/SEI 49: Wind Tunnel Testing for Buildings and Other Structures
  • MOP 74: Guidelines for Electrical Transmission Line Structural Loading
  • MOP 140: Climate-Resilient Infrastructure: Adaptive Design and Risk Management
  • MOP 144: Hazard-Resilient Infrastructure: Analysis and Design
