Future weather and climate extremes, as a result of our climate crisis, are leading to critical impacts on our roads nationwide. However, transportation stakeholders can leverage a broad spectrum of proactive measures for adaptation actions and weather mitigation.

Accordingly, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) is hosting a webinar “Climate-Resilient, Low-Volume Road Design and Management.” The objective of the webinar is to “…present useful and practical climate adaptation measures that road designers and managers can implement to help “stormproof” roads and reduce the risk of climate-induced damage.”

During the webinar, presenters share key measures for road maintenance, drainage design, slope stabilization, and debris flow to prevent or minimize damage from severe weather, including wildfires and storms.

Further, the webinar is sponsored by TRB’s Standing Technical Committee on Low-Volume Roads; and recently, the committee also sponsored the 13th TRB International Conference on Low Volume Roads in Cedar Rapids, IA on July 23-26, 2023.

Learning objectives include: utilizing a variety of tools or design measures, particularly related to drainage, to prevent storm damage to roads; and, implementing damage prevention measures and fire-flood-debris flow mechanisms.

Webinar presenters feature: Gordon R. Keller, Genesee Geotechnical, on climate-resilient, low-volume road design; Donald N. Lindsay, California Geological Survey on fire, floods, and debris flow impacts on rural infrastructure; with, Laura Fay, Western Transportation Institute, as the moderator.
