NASEM summit on equitable pathways to meet the climate crisis

The summit features “engaging experts, community stakeholders, and decision-makers on equitable pathways to meet the climate crisis.” Further, the National Academies highlight how our global community is currently at a critical crossroads to address the broad spectrum of threats to our systems, services, and societies, posed by the climate crisis now and in the future. As an immediate call to action, the National Academies assert that we must harness the full complement of knowledge and skills across various professional disciplines, including climate science and engineering of infrastructure assets and the built environment.
Building on more than 40 years of foundational work on climate change, the National Academies are stepping up efforts to meet the most urgent issue of our time. This year, the National Academies launched Climate Crossroads, a new initiative that leverages our disciplinary breadth and capacity for collaboration.
Climate Crossroads provides space to respond to new challenges as they arise, expands the Academies’ work to a more diverse range of stakeholders and decision-makers, and is developing new ways to work with underrepresented communities on climate.

Further, the roundtable focuses first on translating potential risks associated with climate change, and second, on transitioning toward a carbon-neutral economy via macroeconomic modeling. Challenges include harmonizing data collection and adjusting analytical approaches in macroeconomic models to accommodate climate risks and opportunities.
