The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking suggestions for experts to participate in the new study, Optimizing Research on Experimental Prescribed Fires to Improve Understanding of Wildland Fire and Smoke Behavior. For this study, an ad hoc committee will examine how research on experimental fires can be improved to strengthen fire and smoke models for prescribed burns. National Academies Staff are searching for nominees with a variety of backgrounds and expertise.

Some areas of expertise relevant to this study include: wildland fire planning and management; Indigenous practices; wildland fire emissions; smoke transport and dispersion; fire weather observations and modelling; ecosystem science; landscape and wildland fire fuels dynamics; atmospheric chemistry; atmospheric modelling; complex system modeling theory and methodology; observational tools and sensors, including remote sensing technologies and platforms; artificial intelligence/machine learning; and, data management systems and platforms.
