The following is a summary of Climate Change Impacts on the Risk Assessment of Concrete Civil Infrastructures, authored by De-Cheng Feng, M.ASCE, Jia-Yi Ding, Si-Cong Xie, Yue Li, M.ASCE, Mitsuyoshi Akiyama, M.ASCE, Yong Lu, F.ASCE, Michael Beer, M.ASCE, and Jie Li, M.ASCE, and published in the Multidisciplinary Journal of Civil Engineering, Volume 2.
Our changing climate affects civil infrastructure’s service life and performance. The changing environment causes uncertainties that require rigorous quantification to be incorporated into risk assessment and management. Further, a lack of quantification impedes infrastructure stakeholders’ decision-making to mitigate risks exacerbated by our changing climate. In this paper, the authors conduct a state-of-the-art review of existing studies concerning the influence of climate change on the risk assessment of concrete civil infrastructure.
The review covers the following key aspects: (1) climate variables and associated uncertainties; (2) frequency and intensity of natural hazards under various future climate scenarios; (3) impact of climate change on deterioration mechanisms of concrete structures; (4) risk assessment methodology considering climate change; (5) climate-related multi-hazard risk assessment; and, (6) adaptation strategies for increasing risk of failure of civil infrastructure caused by climate change.
The authors discuss the basic concepts and challenges concerning the impact of climate change on concrete infrastructure. The review benefits future research in the field of concrete infrastructure on topics related to structural performance, asset durability, and risk assessment. In summary, the article promotes appropriate adaptation planning and risk-based decision-making for concrete infrastructure designers and operators under our changing climate.
