Transportation Research Board Addresses Climate Change Challenges

The resilience of our transportation networks to future weather and climate extremes is mission-critical to our systems, services, and societies. The Transportation Research Board (TRB) hosts a webinar Transportation Resilience Addressing Climate Change Challenges on July 26, 2023, to “…highlight emerging evidence-based best practices on resilience planning, projects, recovery, processes, and programs.” Further, the presenters focus on understanding vulnerability and improving resilience to all forms of transportation.

During the webinar on climate change and transportation resilience, the presenters “…share efforts to integrate resilience in other aspects of the transportation sector…” across the total asset lifecycle, including planning and design, operations and maintenance (O&M), and asset and emergency management. Also, the webinar supports TRB’s Transportation Resilience 2023 conference on how to adapt transportation networks to climate change and extreme weather impacts.

Learning objectives of the webinar on climate change challenges include: prioritizing and evaluating new methods and the performance on resilience investments; sharing approaches for integrating climate resilience into agency processes, design standards, and standards of practice; and, developing a shared understanding of transportation resilience concepts and state of practice. The webinar is sponsored by TRB’s Standing Technical Committee on Extreme Weather and Climate Adaptation.

Climate Conversations on Nature-Based Solutions to Bolster Community Resiliency

Climate Conversations on Nature-Based Solutions to Bolster Community Resiliency

As a part of a monthly webinar series hosted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the webinar Climate Conversations: Nature-Based Solutions focuses on “…how to better work with nature to build climate resilience and support human well-being and ecosystems.” Some of the many nature-based solutions include restoring wetlands, planting trees in cities, and using cover crops. Further, nature-based solutions present cost-effective strategies to bolster community resiliency and achieve Paris Agreement targets by 2030. The webinar highlights how conservation groups; federal, state, and local agencies; international organizations; and private enterprises are beginning to integrate nature-based solutions to address our climate crisis.

Sustainable and Resilient Engineering to Mitigate Climate Disasters

Engineering, mechanics, and materials to mitigate climate-related disasters

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) presents the webinar Case Studies in Sustainable and Resilient Structural Engineering, Mechanics, and Materials (SR-SEMM). The course instructor is Fariborz M. Tehrani, Ph.D., PE, ENV SP, PMP, SAP, F.ASCE. Recommended attendees include structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, construction engineers, environmental engineers, architectural engineers, and other stakeholders interested in sustainability, resilience, materials, and infrastructure policy and planning. The benefits and learning outcomes of the webinar include to:

  • Identify and explain three principles of sustainability and resilience, and apply them to selected SR-SEMM solutions in civil engineering projects following ISI Envision Framework and UN SDGs.
  • Analyze five domains of sustainable and four domains of resilient performances for selected SR-SEMM solutions in complex civil engineering projects following ISI Envision and EMI ORC MOP.
  • Comprehend, analyze, develop, and assess PCR, EPD, and LCA documents for selected SR-SEMM practices across three Net Zero concepts following EPA’s Initiative and ASCE COS Standard.

Purpose and Background: “The field of sustainable and resilient structural engineering, mechanics, and materials (SR-SEMM) incorporates cross-disciplinary concerns with natural resources and objective approaches to mitigate climate-related disasters. This presentation introduces fundamental motivations, key concepts, and a brief review of selected applications of SR-SEMM, from lightweight materials to seismic isolation systems for sustainable and resilient infrastructure. Discussions include the technical, environmental, and societal performance of applications using standard practices and guidelines for assessing safety, sustainability, and resilience in various civil engineering domains such as buildings, roadways, embankments, and marine environments. Outcomes provide a roadmap for planning, management, design, and construction professionals to adopt SR-SEMM solutions in practice.”
