The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine presents the 2023-2024 Jefferson Science Fellowships Distinguished Lecture Series: Jean Lynch-Stieglitz entitled “What are climate tipping points and will we encounter them?” The lecture reviews the potential for irreversible, abrupt, and autonomous or “runaway” change for Earth system elements and climate tipping points. About the 2023-2024 Jefferson Science Fellowships Distinguished Lecture Series: Jean Lynch-Stieglitz: “It seems like every few weeks there is a headline about climate tipping points. We know that elements of the climate system have undergone abrupt change in the past, and that physical systems can transition to radically different states in the face of a small push. But there are conflicting definitions of Earth system tipping points, and thus conflicting statements about whether we are indeed on the brink of encountering them as the Earth warms. I will review the potential for irreversible, abrupt, or self-sustaining (“runaway”) change for some of the Earth system elements for which climate tipping points have been proposed.” Jean Lynch-Stieglitz is a paleoceanographer known for her research on reconstructing changes in ocean circulation over the last 100,000 years.
