In various fields of science and engineering, growing enthusiasm exists for the potential of digital twins to revolutionize scientific research and industrial processes. A digital twin combines computational models with a physical counterpart to form a system that continuously updates through two-way data flows as conditions change. Digital twins possess the potential to go beyond traditional simulation and modeling, empowering predictions of future weather and climate conditions over long periods, and safer and more efficient engineering processes. However, stakeholders must address critical challenges to unlock the full benefit of digital twins.

Accordingly, the National Academies hosts a webinar on Friday, December 15, 2023, to delve into a new report on the fundamental research and resources necessary to advance digital twin technologies. Further, the new report highlights crucial areas for future research and presents an interdisciplinary research agenda, with recommendations on how federal agencies and researchers from different fields can effectively collaborate. During the webinar, committee members discuss the report’s key findings and relevant recommendations.
