Creating Climate Resilient Cities with Singapore’s National Digital Twin

A recent article in Infrastructure Global highlights how Singapore’s digital twin of its nation, a first in the world, holds the potential to help create better cities, as affirmed by Mark Coates and Andrew Foster of Bentley Systems (NASDAQ: BSY). Commissioned by the Singapore Land Authority (SLA), the objectives of the national digital twin include mitigating climate risks and weather hazards, including flash floods, torrential rains, and other events. As Singapore is the world’s most densely populated nation — with a population greater than one million inhabitants, land use on the small island is mission-critical to its sustainability.

In 2012, the Singapore Land Authority started creating a three-dimensional map of the island nation. Following the 3D map, GPS Lands Singapore approached the SLA with a plan to develop Virtual Singapore, a digital twin using software provided by Bentley Systems — ClimaTwin is a strategic partner of Bentley Systems, with deep integration to its digital twin technologies. Further, Singapore leveraged laser-scanning aircraft to record natural terrain and map surface information with great detail. In summary, infrastructure digital twins can unlock tremendous value for climate risk and resiliency at all levels of the built world.

Benefits to Infrastructure Stakeholders of the Bentley iTwin Digital Twin Platform

Continued from the previous post Leveraging Digital Twins and the Network Effect: How Funding to Improve Technology Can Help Expand Your Ecosystem

By Cindy Ross, Product Marketing Manager, iTwin Platform

Some types of technologies benefit even more strongly from the network effect. Open-source, vendor-neutral digital twin platforms, such as Bentley’s iTwin Platform, are specifically designed to add more value as more users join, whether they use Bentley applications or not. In this environment, users can create bespoke solutions that modify or build upon existing solutions, rather than needing to create their desired digital twin from scratch. Once perfected, users can share their solutions with other users, which makes the design process easier and helps spark further innovation.

Our colleagues are working in partnership with engineering firms, governments, and owner-operators of infrastructure assets, who are on very different trajectories of their digital transformation journey. As John Sullens, Senior Technology and Innovation Consultant at Burns & McDonnell shared, “One key importance of having a digital twin is the ability to combine real-time asset/site data with physical dependency models, and intelligence from different platforms to more accurately scope future projects, reducing project risk from using erroneous records drawings.”

In short, progress begets more progress. What was once an almost intractable program management challenge will grow into an increasingly beneficial and interconnected ecosystem. NASA’s Apollo program showed that success takes a village. No single user or vendor can do it alone, but together, supported by open, vendor-neutral technology we can repair and enhance infrastructure for all.
