Innovative actions to prevent, adapt to, or mitigate the health consequences of extreme heat

For the workshop series on Communities, Climate Change, and Health Equity, the National Academies seeks experts to identify key elements of effective action to prevent and mitigate inequitable health risks from climate change and extreme heat. The National Academies welcomes nominations for individuals with interdisciplinary knowledge in the following areas:

  • Climate science
  • Environmental, economic, and racial justice
  • Environmental health
  • Public health
  • Energy, equity, and housing
  • Epidemiology
  • Risk management
  • Disaster relief and planning
  • Sustainable planning, design, and architecture
  • Science communication

Further, the National Academies explores “a diverse set of real-world challenges affecting different communities, and the innovative actions being pursued to prevent, adapt to, or mitigate the health consequences of extreme heat.”

The series on Communities, Climate Change, and Health Equity is “part of the overarching Environmental Health Matters Initiative (EHMI) vision to improve the health of all people equitably, based on the strongest scientific evidence available.”

About the Environmental Health Matters Initiative (EHMI)

From the air we breathe to the water we drink, our health is defined by our natural environment. Environmental health is the science that focuses on reducing harmful environmental exposures in air, water, soil, and food to protect human health and well-being, as well as provide all communities with healthier environments.

The Environmental Health Matters Initiative (EHMI) convenes government, industry, and academic leaders to share ideas and form connections that inspire the development of solutions to our most pressing environmental health challenges.
